That may be it, though many of the afflicted have no kids. One theory I overheard today is that it has to do with page proofs. When we have a manuscript ready to go to print, the page proofs are routed one last time through all the departments—editorial, marketing, cartography, and production—for sign off. So it only takes one sick puppy…
Makes me extra thankful that I work on the website—I never have to touch page proofs.
